Perhaps that’s exactly why I felt an irresistible pull towards Conclave, Edward Berger’s captivating thriller revolving around the election of a new pope. This movie, adapted from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel, is sprinkled with priests acting mischievously and Isabella Rossellini expertly expressing disapproval towards just about everyone. However, as far as we know, none of their assorted misdeeds involve any harm to minors. (Though, to be completely honest, there is a subplot concerning Nigeria’s Cardinal Adeyemi getting involved in a forbidden romance with a nun from his homeland, but there’s no particular indication that said nun was underage at that time.) Generally, the questionable actions of these aspiring popes can be summarized into two words: “vaping” and “gossip,” both of which I A-D-O-R-E!
